BRIGHTON, Mass. – Behind a strong pitching performance that saw a season-high 14 strikeouts, and an offensive display that featured hits for every player in the lineup, the Northeastern University baseball team (13-5) defeated Boston College (11-8) by a score of 10-6 on Tuesday afternoon at Harrington Athletics Village.
The offense was led by multi-hit days from
Tyler MacGregor (3),
Luke Beckstein,
Mike Sirota,
Gregory Bozzo and
Carmelo Musacchia (2). On the mound, starter
Michael Gemma notched a career-high eight strikeouts in just 3.1 innings pitched, as the bullpen finished the game with six more punch-outs on the day.
Charlie Walker (2-0) got the win, pitching the last two outs of the fourth inning and all of the fifth inning, and
Aiven Cabral (SV, 1) earned his first career save working the final four innings.
- An early pitcher's duel was broken by the Huskies when they tallied three runs in the fourth inning. Justin Bosland singled, took second on an error, stole third on a strikeout, and scored on a passed ball to score the first run of the game.
- The next batter, Gregory Bozzo, hit a solo shot to the left field corner to double the lead, 2-0. After a free base to Luke Beckstein, he was hit home by Tyler MacGregor on an RBI double to left center to make it 3-0.
- BC responded in the bottom of the inning on a pair of back to back RBI base hits to lead 4-3.
- The Huskies put up another run in the fifth to tie it back up – after Justin Bosland reached first base on a fielding error, he stole second and was hit home by Harrison Feinberg on the RBI double.
- The Eagles got back on top in the bottom of the fifth with a two-out solo shot to left field, leading 5-4 going into the sixth.
- Northeastern hung four on the scoreboard in the sixth – after a Carmelo Musacchia single, Beckstein executed a hit-and-run play belting a double down the left field line and allowing Musacchia to score easily from first.
- With one out in the inning, Mike Sirota hit a shallow left field single and Beckstein beat the throw home to retake the lead.
- Alex Lane extended the lead with his first hit of the game, a two-run blast to left field, to extend the lead to 8-5.
- After retaking the lead the Huskies got a huge shutdown inning in the bottom of the sixth from Aiven Cabral, retiring the Eagles with a 1-2-3 inning.
- The Huskies got more insurance with a BC balk in the top of the eighth - Tyler MacGregor trotted home for the 9-5 lead.
- Northeastern notched a hit in all nine innings of the game, with Beckstein belting an RBI double to left-center to score Musacchia, who reached on a fielder's choice, for the 10-5 lead.
- Cabral allowed just one run in his outing, a solo home run in the ninth, to cut the lead down to four. He allowed just two other hits besides the homer, notching three strikeouts of his own.
- Walker earned his second relief win of the season, pitching 1.2 innings allowing just one run on one hit. He also notched three strikeouts in his outing, after coming in with two outs needed in the fourth after BC took their first lead. He got the last two outs of the fourth and worked a one-hit fifth inning before NU took the lead for good.
- The win is Northeastern's fourth straight midweek win, and second straight win in the all-time series against Boston College. It's the first win for NU at Harrington Athletics Village, which opened in 2018.
The Huskies return home to Friedman Diamond on Wednesday afternoon to face the Merrimack Warriors. That game is set for 3:00 p.m. on FloBaseball.
