BROOKLINE, Mass. – In their last midweek game before the start of their conference schedule, the Northeastern Huskies (14-5) defeated the Merrimack Warriors (3-15) by a score of 9-5 on Wednesday afternoon at Friedman Diamond.
A game that saw four lead changes ended in favor of the Huskies, who hung five runs in the bottom of the sixth to pull away.
Tyler MacGregor notched three hits for the second straight contest, along with
Jack Goodman (3) and
Mike Sirota (2) also notching multi-hit days. MacGregor led the offense with four RBIs, Goodman with three.
- Northeastern hopped out to an early 2-0 lead after a double from Mike Sirota and a two-run home run over the right field press box by Tyler MacGregor.
- The Warriors responded with a two-run home run of their own in the second, and a sac-fly in the third to lead 3-2.
- Merrimack kept the Northeastern bats in check until the fifth inning when Tyler MacGregor notched a one-out double, and Jack Goodman hit a two-out two-run homer to left field to retake the lead, 4-3.
- The Warriors would not go quietly, answering the two run bottom of the fifth with a two run top of the sixth to retake the lead 5-4.
- It was the bottom of the sixth inning where the Husky bats finally broke out with a no-out double by Sirota with a runner in scoring position to tie the game, and the next batter Tyler MacGregor knocked in two more with a double to make it 7-5.
- After MacGregor advanced to third, he was hit home by Goodman on an RBI single for the eighth run.
- Northeastern added another insurance run on a bases loaded walk to Jack Doyle, notching an RBI.
- The Husky bullpen shut down the Merrimack offense in the top of the seventh and held on for the victory – it was Brendan McFall earning the win, finishing the top of the sixth inning before the Huskies exploded for five runs in the bottom of the inning.
- Finishing out the game was James Quinlivan (2.0, 0H, 1BB, 2K) in the seventh and eighth, and Dennis Colleran working a 1-2-3 ninth with a strikeout to finish the game.
- It was the seventh all-time meeting between the two programs – Northeastern leads the all-time series 5-2.
- For the third straight game, Northeastern pitching struck out over 10 opposing batters. They struck out 13 at URI, 14 at Boston College, and 11 against Merrimack.
- Other strikeouts came from the starter Brett Dunham (5) and relievers Ryan Griffin (1) and Nick Coniglio (2).
The Huskies head to Long Island this weekend to begin CAA play at Hofstra. The series begins this Friday, March 22
