Huskies Split Double Header At Hofstra

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – On the first day of the CAA baseball schedule, Northeastern University (15-6, 1-1 CAA) and Hofstra University (7-14, 1-1 CAA) split a Friday double header at University Field, with the Pride taking game one 3-2, and the Huskies taking game two 13-9.

Bouncing back from game one, Northeastern had four batters tally multi-hit games in game two, led by Carmelo Musacchia, who put the game away with the team's first grand slam of the season in the top of the seventh inning. Jack Doyle and Matt Brinker had the other three RBI in the contest.

GAME ONE – NU 2, HOFSTRA 3
  • Northeastern struck first in the opening inning, with a lead off single from Luke Beckstein followed by a two-run homer by Tyler MacGregor to lead 2-0.
  • Hofstra answered back in the bottom of the frame, producing three runs on two hits to lead 3-2.
  • There were no runs scored by either team past the first, as both pitching staffs settled in. Northeastern tallied five more hits in the game but stranded nine total runners in the game.
  • Starting pitcher Jake Gigliotti suffered his first career loss, allowing just the three runs on four hits.
  • Reliever Jack Bowery pitched the final four innings without allowing a hit until the bottom of the eighth – he shut out the Pride with three strike outs.
  • The loss was Northeastern's first of the season when holding its opponents to five runs or fewer in the game.

GAME TWO – NU 13, HOFSTRA 9
  • The Huskies once again struck first in the top of the opening inning, loading the bases and bringing in a run after Jack Doyle took a pitch high in the torso to score Tyler MacGregor from third.
  • After Hofstra was able to get out of the bases-loaded jam, a solo shot in the bottom of the first tied the game at 1-1.
  • The Pride were able to go up 3-1 on an RBI double in the bottom of the second, but the Huskies answered back in the top of the third, with heads up base running for Harrison Feinberg, scoring from third on a passed ball, followed by Doyle who scored on a wild pitch during the same at bat, tying the game 3-3.
  • Hofstra once again took the lead in the third, with a two-RBI double. The Huskies cut into the lead in the following inning on another wild pitch, but a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the inning kept Hofstra's lead at two runs.
  • Northeastern tallied four runs in the top of the sixth, three of them with two outs. After Luke Beckstein was hit by a pitch, he was advanced on a single by MacGregor, and ran home on a double play to cut the deficit to one run, 6-5.
  • With two outs, Alex Lane singled to shallow left-center, Feinberg walked, and Jack Doyle hit an RBI single up the middle to tie the game at 6-6.
  • The next two batters, Carmelo Musacchia and Matt Brinker, each dug out infield singles to score runners an take the lead, 8-6.
  • Out of the bullpen, Cooper McGrath delivered a huge shutdown inning in the bottom of the sixth, with a fly out, strike out, and ground out, to preserve the lead and build momentum for the Huskies.
  • The Huskies extended the lead in the seventh on another double play that scored a run, and a grand slam from Musacchia. The bases were loaded by Doyle, Feinberg, and MacGregor, on two HBPs and one walk, respectively. Musacchia's grand slam made it 13-6.
  • Cooper McGrath earned the win, working three innings and allowing just three unearned runs on four hits, two walks, and four strikeouts.
  • Jack Beauchesne slammed the door with two scoreless innings, working the eighth and ninth allowing just one hit, two walks, and no runs. He struck out three batters on the afternoon.
  • Northeastern capitalized on the freebies in game two, drawing eight walks, 10 hit-by-pitches, and advanced on four wild pitches and one passed ball. The Huskies also stole nine bases on the day, tying their season high.

Tied 1-1, the series will be decided in game three which begins Sunday at noon on FloBaseball.
