Doyle Walks It Off, Huskies Beat Blue Devils In 10 Innings

BROOKLINE, Mass. – In the bottom of the 10th inning, Jack Doyle drew a bases-loaded walk on a 10-pitch at bat to send Northeastern (17-6) into the win column over CCSU (6-9) in walk-off fashion at Friedman Diamond on Tuesday afternoon.

The Huskies, who trailed by four runs at the end of the sixth inning and two runs in the ninth, notched three runs in the seventh, and two more in the ninth to force extra innings. Doyle got the final RBI of the nine innings with a sac-fly to tie it, and Jack Bowery (W, 2-0) blanked the Blue Devils in the eighth and shut them down in the top of the 10th to give the offense a chance. Doyle's walk was his third RBI of the afternoon.

Huskies also got big offensive days from Tyler MacGregor (3-for-5, 2B), Carmelo Musacchia (2-for-4), and homers from Alex Lane and Luke Beckstein.

  • The Blue Devils were able to strike first, belting a solo two-out home run to left field to lead 1-0.
  • Northeastern tied and took the lead in the bottom of the third with an RBI single from Mike Sirota and a three-run homer from Alex Lane to left-center, leading 4-1.
  • Starting pitcher Brett Dunham had a strong outing working two scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and one walk. He notched four strikeouts in the opening two frames.
  • CCSU notched a home run to left in the fourth, cutting the lead down to 4-3, and a sac-fly and grand slam to left field in the fifth gave the Blue Devils an 8-4 lead.
  • The Huskies put a three on the scoreboard in the seventh on an RBI fielder's choice from Sirota, a sac-fly from Lane, and an RBI double from Jack Doyle to cut the deficit down to 8-7. CCSU got the last run back in the top of the eighth with a sacrifice bunt to lead 9-7.
  • A solo homer to left field for Luke Beckstein, and sac-fly from Jack Doyle tied the game in the ninth, but the Huskies couldn't plate the winning run after loading the bases and the game went to extra innings knotted at 9-9.
  • After a clutch 1-2-3 top of the 10th inning from Jack Bowery, including an unassisted putout, the Huskies loaded the bases on three walks, two intentional, and with two outs on a full-count, Jack Doyle took the 10th pitch of the at-bat low for a bases-loaded walk off walk, scoring Cam Maldonado from third.
  • The Husky bullpen got strong showings from James Quinlivan, who worked 2.1 innings allowing just one run and one hit, and Jack Bowery, who allowed one run on two hits in 3.0 innings of work. Quinlivan notched one strikeout, and Bowery notched three.
  • It was Northeastern's second walk-off win of the season, both coming in a midweek game at Friedman. It's the Huskies' first extra-inning game of the season, and first since the 2023 CAA tournament.
  • The win was Northeastern's fourth of the season when trailing by four runs, and the first win of the season when trailing after eight innings.

Northeastern wraps up the midweek slate with a trip to UConn Wednesday afternoon – game time is set for 3:05 p.m. on UConn+.
