STORRS, Conn. – In another close midweek game, the Northeastern Huskies (18-6) defeated the UConn Huskies (9-15) by a score of 7-6 at Elliot Ballpark on Wednesday afternoon.
Paced by five RBIs from
Jack Doyle, including a three-run home run in the fifth to give NU a big lead midway through the game, the Huskies offense took advantage of three walks and three hit-by-pitches to score seven runs on just five hits.
Alex Lane chipped in with a two-hit, two-RBI day, and with UConn threatening late in the ninth it was
Jack Beauchesne coming in with two outs, slamming the door for Northeastern's seventh straight midweek win.
- NU struck first with a hit-by-pitch to Tyler MacGregor, a walk to Mike Sirota, and an RBI single from Alex Lane that scored MacGregor from second. A Jack Doyle RBI ground out scored Sirota from third for a 2-0 Northeastern lead.
- UConn answered back in the second, with a two-out rally that saw a single, walk and a two-RBI double to the right field corner to tie it.
- Northeastern took the lead back in the third, after Mike Sirota belted a hustle double to left-center field, moved to third on an single by Lane, and then ran home on an RBI fielder's choice by Doyle to lead 3-2.
- The lead was extended with a four-run top of the fifth inning – after the bases were loaded from hit-by-pitches to Harrison Feinberg and Luke Beckstein, and a full-count walk to Mike Sirota, MacGregor hit a deep fly to right field foul ground to drive in Feinberg on the sac-fly.
- Two batters later, it was Jack Doyle with two outs belting a three-run homer to left, for his third, fourth, and fifth RBIs of the afternoon. Northeastern took a 7-2 lead into the bottom of the fifth.
- UConn chipped away with an RBI double in the fifth, and an RBI ground out in the seventh to cut the lead down to 7-4.
- Starting pitcher Michael Gemma worked the opening 4.2 innings, allowing three runs on four hits and a walk, striking out three. His record on the year moves to 3-0.
- First out of the pen was Charlie Walker, who retired all four batters he faced, notching two strikeouts.
- Dennis Colleran worked two full innings allowing just one run on two hits – he retired UConn 1-2-3 with three straight strike outs in the bottom of the eighth.
- With UConn threatening with a two-out two-RBI double down the left field line to cut the lead to one run, Jack Beauchesne was called in from the bullpen and got the final out earning his second save of the season.
- On the day, the NU pitching staff struck out nine batters, and walked just one.
- The win was Northeastern's third straight at Elliot Ballpark.
