BROOKLINE, Mass. – In game two of their three-game weekend set, the Northeastern Huskies (20-6, 4-1 CAA) defeated the Monmouth Hawks (7-14, 3-2 CAA) by a score of 7-1 at Friedman Diamond on Saturday afternoon.
The Hawks recorded one run on three hits in the opening inning, but
Aiven Cabral (W, 1-2) and the NU defense settled in as the game went on, preventing Monmouth from tallying any more runs or hits for the rest of the game. Two-hit days from
Alex Lane (2-for-5, 2R, 2 RBI),
Tyler MacGregor (2-for-5, 2 2B, RBI), and
Luke Beckstein (2-for-3) led the way for the Husky offense, which plated runs in the first, second, fourth and sixth innings.
- Despite the Hawks plating the first run of the game in the top of the first, the Huskies responded with three runs of their own in the bottom of the inning.
- It was an infield blooper by Alex Lane scoring Luke Beckstein from third, a failed pick off that allowed Tyler MacGregor to score from third, and a sac fly by Jack Goodman to bring in Lane.
- NU's fourth run came in the bottom of the second on a fielder's choice RBI by Tyler MacGregor, who beat out the double play ball as Ryan Gerety ran home from third.
- The Huskies plated the fifth run in the fourth inning on another sac-fly from Goodman, bringing home MacGregor.
- In the sixth it was an RBI double from Alex Lane down the left field line, and a sac-fly from Jack Doyle to extend the lead to 7-1.
- Starting pitcher Aiven Cabral worked six strong innings of one-run, three-hit baseball, leaving the game with a 7-1 lead. He struck out three and walked two.
- Jack Bowery worked the final three innings out of the bullpen, allowing no runs and just two walks in his outing. He earned his second save of the year.
- The Huskies are now 6-1 when holding opponents to three runs or fewer – they've met that mark in three of five CAA games this season (2-1).
