Northeastern Sweeps Monmouth, Wins Game Three 7-2

BROOKLINE, Mass. – In the final game of the weekend, Northeastern (21-6, 5-1 CAA) defeated Monmouth (7-15, 3-3) to sweep the weekend series with a 7-2 win on Sunday afternoon at Friedman Diamond.

Northeastern got a strong six-inning start from Wyatt Scotti (W, 5-2) collecting his 23rd career win. The Huskies took the lead for good in the third, and held a 4-2 lead into the eighth inning before pulling away with three runs in the frame. Tyler MacGregor had another three-hit day, going 3-for-5 with three RBIs.

  • The Huskies jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first, after Luke Beckstein was hit by a pitch, took second on a wild pitch, third on a failed pick off, and was sent home on a Tyler Macgregor RBI single.
  • After a sac-fly for Monmouth tied the game in the top of the second, the Huskies loaded the bases in the bottom of the third, and Carmelo Musacchia drew a full-count walk to retake the lead, scoring MacGregor from third.
  • In the sixth inning, the Huskies extended the lead with some small ball – after two straight hit-by-pitches to start the inning, a sacrifice bunt from Gregory Bozzo moved both runners into scoring position, and an RBI single from Ryan Gerety brought home Musacchia from third.
  • The next batter, Beckstein, placed a sac bunt far enough into the infield to the right of the pitchers mound, allowing Cam Maldonado to score from third for the 4-1 lead.
  •  Monmouth got a run back in the top of the seventh, on an RBI ground out to cut into the lead 4-2.
  • The Huskies extended the lead again in the bottom of the eighth putting up three runs off the bats of Beckstein and MacGregor, to lead 7-2.
  • Starter Wyatt Scotti worked the opening six innings allowing just two hits, two runs, one of them earned, and no walks with five strikeouts on the day.
  • Out of the bullpen in the seventh and eighth was Dennis Colleran (1.1, 2H, 0R, 1BB, 1K) and Charlie Walker (0.2, 0H, 0R, 0BB). Walker entered the game with one out and two on in the eighth and got an inning-ending double play ball to prevent the Hawks from scoring.
  • Closer Jack Beauchesne finished the game on the mound, striking out the side in the ninth on just 11 pitches.
  • The Huskies earned their first three-game series sweep of the 2024 season with the win, their first CAA sweep since April of 2023.
  • Northeastern has now won seven in a row dating back to March 16th – it's the Huskies' longest winning streak of the 2024 season.

The Huskies host UMass this Tuesday, April 2nd in the opening round of the Baseball Beanpot at Friedman Diamond. That game is set for a 3 p.m. start on FloBaseball.
