NU's Rally Falls Short, Huskies Can't Catch Tigers In Game Two

TOWSON, Md. – After getting the game-tying run on base in the top of the ninth, the Northeastern Huskies (23-7, 6-2 CAA) were unable to force the home half, falling to the Towson Tigers (8-21, 3-5 CAA) by a score of 10-8 on Saturday afternoon at Schuerholz Park.

Towson scored in bunches in the third and fifth innings to lead 10-2, but the Huskies scored two in the sixth, and three in the seventh to bring the game back within reach, and despite a pinch-hit home run in the top of the ninth to cut the lead to 10-8, were unable to bring home two more to tie the game.

  • After neither side was able to convert on runners in scoring position in the opening two innings, the Tigers took the lead in the bottom of the third with a five-run inning.
  • The Huskies responded in the top of the fourth with two quick singles from Tyler MacGregor and Alex Lane, and MacGregor was driven in by Jack Goodman a hard hit ball to third base that couldn't be corralled and sped into left field.
  • Northeastern chipped another run off of the Towson lead in the fifth on an RBI double by Tyler MacGregor, scoring Ryan Gerety from second.
  • The Tigers once again produced a five run inning in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single to shallow center, followed by a grand slam to extend their lead to 10-2.
  • Jack Doyle started the attempted rally with another home run, his second of the weekend, scoring Mike Sirota to make it 10-4.
  • After a walk to Matt Brinker and a HBP to Beckstein in the top of the seventh, Tyler MacGregor clobbered a pitch and sent it over the right field wall to cut the deficit down to just three runs at 10-7.
  • Needing three runs in the top of the ninth, Gregory Bozzo took to the batter's box to pinch hit and hit a one-out solo shot over the left field wall to continue the rally. After singles from Beckstein and Lane kept the inning rolling, the Tigers were able to get the final fly out to secure the win.
  • Northeastern got three strong relief innings out of Cooper McGrath in the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings, allowing no runs on just two hits and a walk, and recording three strikeouts.
  • The loss snaps a nine-game winning streak for the Huskies and a four-game conference winning streak.
  • Northeastern's four committed errors were the most by the defense this season. The Huskies hadn't committed more than three errors in a game since the 2022 season.
The two teams wrap up the series on Sunday, April 7th – game time is scheduled for 1 p.m. on FloBaseball.
