LOWELL, Mass. – In their midweek finale, the Northeastern Huskies (35-15) defeated the UMass Lowell River Hawks (22-28) by a score of 15-2 on Tuesday afternoon at LeLacheur Park.
The Huskies hit six home runs in the game, led by two from first baseman
Tyler MacGregor, both solo shots, and former River Hawk, designated hitter
Jimmy Sullivan, hitting his first two homers of the season with a two-run shot in the third and a three-run homer in the ninth. Every Husky starter in the lineup recorded a hit, with
Luke Beckstein,
Cam Maldonado,
Matt Brinker and
Ryan Gerety also recording multi-hit games. Starting pitcher
Will Jones retired 12 straight batters starting in the second inning, en route to his third win of the season.
- Northeastern got the scoring started in the top of the second inning – after back to back base hits from Matt Brinker and Ryan Gerety, and a walk to Luke Beckstein, Brinker scored on a bases-loaded wild pitch to lead 1-0.
- The River Hawks responded in the bottom of the inning with a two-run home run to lead 2-1.
- After Cam Maldonado beat out a double play ball in the top of the third, Jimmy Sullivan hit a two-run home run to right field, his first of the season, to retake the lead 3-2.
- Tyler MacGregor led off the fifth inning with a solo home run over the right-center field wall to extend the lead to 4-2, and Matt Brinker led off the sixth inning with a solo shot to left field to make it 5-2.
- The Huskies hung four runs in the top of the sixth - after a Beckstein bunt single and Mike Sirota reaching on a fielder's choice, they were both driven in on an RBI double down the right field line by MacGregor to give the Huskies a 7-2 lead.
- After MacGregor's double, Cam Maldonado lined another double into right field, scoring MacGregor for the 8-2 lead.
- After allowing just two runs on two hits in the second inning, starting pitcher Will Jones settled in to retire 12 batters in the row, finishing the day after 6.0 complete innings with six strikeouts.
- Jones was relieved by Brett Dunham to start the bottom of the seventh – he allowed just one hit in the inning, recording one strikeout.
- In the eighth the Huskies added two more on a lead off solo home run by MacGregor, his fifth multi-HR game of the season, and a sacrifice fly by Jack Goodman to score Jack Doyle to extend the lead to eight runs.
- Working the bottom of the eighth was Charlie Walker, retiring the side with a fly out, strikeout, and a ground out.
- Northeastern added five more in the ninth on a two-run homer from Sirota, and three-run homer from Jimmy Sullivan, his second long ball of the day, to lead 15-2.
- In the ninth it was Joseph Hauser working around a 1-out double, getting two fly outs to close out the game.
- It's the fourth game of the season in which the Huskies tallied 18 or more hits in a game.
