WILMINGTON, N.C. – In the first round of the 2024 CAA Baseball tournament, #3 Northeastern (38-16) fell to #6 Hofstra (24-31) by a score of 12-9 on Tuesday afternoon at Brooks Field.
A back-and-forth contest finally swung in favor of the Pride in the fifth and sixth innings, who held a 10-6 lead going into the seventh. Despite a big inning for the Huskies in seventh, cutting the deficit down to just one run, the Pride were able to halt the Husky bats and secure the upset victory.
- The Pride got on the board early with two runs on three hits, two of them infield hits, for the 2-0 lead.
- Northeastern's response was two runs on three hits of their own in the bottom of the frame. Back to back one-out base knocks for Mike Sirota and Tyler MacGregor gave way for an RBI double to right field for Jack Doyle, scoring both runners to tie the game.
- The Huskies took their first lead of the game with a two-out, two-RBI single by Mike Sirota, scoring Gregory Bozzo (single) and Cam Maldonado (single) to lead 4-2.
- The lead for Northeastern lasted just two batters as the Pride hit a lead off single and a two-run home run to begin the top of the third inning.
- The Huskies loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning, but a fly out to center field took all momentum as the Pride proceeded to load the bases in the top of the next inning, scoring three runs on one hit
- After a lead off hit from Alex Lane and a one-out double to Jack Goodman, Lane would scored on an RBI ground out by Carmelo Musacchia to bring the deficit down to two runs, 7-5.
- After two quick hits, a single and a double, for Hofstra in the top of the sixth, a two-out double down the left field line, followed by a single to shallow right-center extended the Pride's lead to 10-5.
- A lead off, first pitch home run for Cam Maldonado in the sixth attempted to start a rally, but the Pride were able to strand a runner at first and limit the damage.
- After a sac-fly by Gregory Bozzo in the seventh to score Jack Goodman from third, a two-run home run by Maldonado, his second long ball of the day, cut the deficit to just one run at 10-9.
- Hofstra led off the eighth with a walk which turned into some insurance as back to back base knocks scored two runs for the Pride to re-extend the lead to 12-9.
- The day one loss snaps a three-tournament winning streak for the Huskies to open the CAA tournament. The fourth-seeded Huskies fell 8-6 to #5 UNCW in 11 innings to open that tournament – Northeastern finished 2-2.
- Northeastern is 17-11 in CAA tournament elimination games going into tomorrow's bout with William & Mary.
The Huskies have a quick turnaround as they face #5 William & Mary in an elimination game starting at 11 a.m. on FloBaseball.
