EAST GREENSBORO, N.C. – In a series-opening double header, the Northeastern Huskies (31-13, 13-7 CAA) fell to the North Carolina A&T Aggies (23-23, 7-13 CAA) by scores of 13-5 and 4-2 on Friday afternoon and evening at World War Memorial Stadium.
GAME 1 – NC A&T 13, NU 5
- After a lead off HBP to Luke Beckstein, a pair of home runs from Mike Sirota and Tyler MacGregor gave the Huskies a 3-0 lead before the defense even stepped on the field.
- The Aggies responded in the bottom of the frame with an RBI ground out to make it 3-1.
- After both offenses cooled off in the second through fourth inning, the Huskies added a run back on to the lead with a Cam Maldonado solo shot with one out in the inning, to make it 4-1.
- NC A&T answered back in the bottom of the inning with an RBI single that dropped down the left field line to make it 4-2.
- After another solo home run in the sixth by MacGregor, the Huskies led 5-2 going into the bottom of the sixth.
- The Aggies tallied three runs on a solo home run, a wild pitch and a passed ball to tie the game up heading to the seventh.
- After a scoreless top of the seventh, NC A&T took the lead in the seventh with a two-run home run and an RBI single, leading 8-5.
- NC A&T put up its third straight crooked number in the eighth inning plating five runs on five hits and three errors.
- It's just the fourth game of the season in which Northeastern allowed 10 or more runs.
- Northeastern has just three losses when tallying three or more home runs in a game this year.
GAME 2 – NC A&T 4, NU 2
- Despite an early four hits for the Huskies in the opening three innings, the Huskies could not get any runs across, while the Aggies plated runs in the first off an RBI ground out and in the third on an RBI single to lead 2-0.
- Northeastern got on the board in the top of the fifth on an RBI fielders choice by Alex Lane, scoring Mike Sirota.
- The Aggies would extend the lead in the sixth on a solo home run to lead 3-1.
- Northeastern loaded the bases in the seventh, and got a run in on a bases-loaded HBP to Tyler MacGregor, scoring Chris Walsh, but the Huskies were unable to bring any other runners home in the inning.
- NC A&T tacked that run back on in the seventh on another solo home run to lead 4-2.
- The loss marks the first time the Huskies have been swept in a doubleheader since March of last season, and the first 0-2 series deficit of the season.
Game three of the series is tentatively scheduled for 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 4
th, weather permitting.
