BOSTON - Sam Hughes scored 21 points, including two free throws in the final seconds to force overtime, as Boston University (1-0) survived a back-and-forth battle to defeat Northeastern (0-1) on Opening night at Matthews Arena, 76-75.
The Terriers trailed for most of regulation before Hughes tied the game at 66-66 with two free throws in the final seconds of regulation, sending the contest to overtime. In the extra session, Boston University seized control with an early 6-0 run to take a 72-66 lead with 2:15 remaining.
Northeastern wouldn't go away quietly, though. 
LA Pratt, who led all scorers and tied a career-high with 26 points on 10-of-19 shooting, hit a three-pointer with 41 seconds left to cut the deficit to 76-75. After a steal from 
Luca Soroa Schaller on the ensuring Terrier possession, the Huskies had one final chance after a Boston University turnover, but Pratt's three-point attempt at the buzzer fell short.
For Northeastern, 
Youri Fritz contributed a career-high 15 points and five rebounds, while 
William Kermoury chipped in 14 points to join Pratt in double figures. The Huskies shot 43.3% from the field but struggled from three-point range, connecting on just 5-of-19 attempts (26.3%).
Ben Defty finished 8-of-9 from the field for 20 points while adding eight rebounds and five blocks in 31 minutes for the Terriers, while Ethan Okwuosa provided a spark off the bench with eight points. As a team, Boston University was 28-of-61 (45.9%) overall and 6-of-28 (21.4%) from three, receiving 42 points from the bench.
The Huskies will be back in action on Friday when Northeastern travels to Colgate for a 5 p.m. tip on ESPN+.
