HAMILTON, N.Y. – Trailing by eight with 3:06 left, the Northeastern men's basketball team (1-1) used a 13-2 run down the stretch to claw back and knock off Colgate (0-2) on Friday night at Cotterell Court, 68-65.
Â
Youri Fritz paced the balanced Northeastern attack with a career-high 21 points on 8-of-9 shooting, adding four rebounds and two assists in 36 minutes of action to lead four Huskies in double figures. Fritz's biggest bucket came with 19 seconds left off a feed from
Xavier Abreu that gave Northeastern the lead for good.Â
Â
Abreu went on to give the Huskies a three-point cushion with a pair of clutch free throws with four seconds left following a defensive stand from Northeastern at the other end.
Â
The win gives head coach
Bill Coen his 300th career victory. He is the 73rd active coach to reach the milestone, and just the ninth to do it at just one school.
Â
Northeastern's offense found its rhythm after intermission, shooting 46.4% from the field in the second half compared to just 32.3% in the opening period. The Huskies outscored the Raiders by 11 points over the final 20 minutes to erase the deficit, and got a key defensive stop from Fritz in the final seconds, resulting in a heldball, to secure the win.
Â
LA Pratt played all 40 minutes and contributed 13 points, five assists, and two steals while providing steady leadership at the guard position.Â
Xander Alarie delivered a strong performance with 13 points on 3-of-6 shooting, going a perfect 7-of-7 from the free-throw line while grabbing 13 rebounds for his first collegiate double-double.
Â
Miles Newton added 10 points, including two three-pointers, whileÂ
Mike Loughnane chipped in seven points off the bench.
Â
As a team Northeastern shot 39% in the game (23-of-59) while holding Colgate to a 40% shooting night and turning 11 Raider turnovers into 19 points. Sam Wright and Kyle Carlesimo scored 16 points apiece for Colgate.
Â
Northeastern will be back in action on Tuesday when the Huskies travel to Cambridge for a meeting with Harvard. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. on ESPN+.
