ELON, N.C. – Ty Francis (23) and
William Kermoury (20) combined for 43 points and the Northeastern men's basketball team (4-8, 0-1) shot 57% from the floor, but Elon (9-5, 1-0) responded with a 62% shooting night of its own to down the Huskies on Monday night at the Schar Center, 103-91.
Northeastern finished the night a season-best 14-of-21 from long range, including a 9-of-12 mark in the first half, the Huskies most made threes in the opening 20 minutes since Dec. 29, 2022 against North Carolina A&T (9-of-14).
Francis, who earned his first start of the season on Monday, finished his career night 9-of-11 from the floor along with four rebounds and two steals, while Kermoury tied a career-high in points on 7-of-12 overall and 6-of-10 from deep, the second time this year he's made six threes in a game.
Mike Loughnane also reached double figures with 13 points and five dimes for a Northeastern squad that finished 33-of-58 overall.
Northeastern's duo was topped only by that of Elon's though, as Kacper Klaczek and Chandler Cuthrell scored 28 apiece for a Phoenix team that shot 36-of-58 overall, 12-of-27 from three, and controlled the glass throughout the contest, 32-21.
Elon never trailed in the game, and led by as many as 10 in the first half thanks to a 56% shooting performance in the opening 20 minutes. Northeastern hung tough, though, shooting 54% overall and 75% from deep to stay in it, trailing by only three at the break 46-43.
The Huskies continued the battle into the second half, leveling the game at 62 with 12:28 to play on a three-point play from
Luca Soroa Schaller (eight points, six assists).
It would remain a one possession game until the midway mark of the second half when the Phoenix used a 9-2 run over the next three minutes, part of its 69% shooting in the second half, to take the lead for good before icing it at the free throw line late.
The Huskies will be back in action on Wednesday when Northeastern heads to North Carolina A&T for a 3 p.m. tip-off on FloCollege.
