WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Ryan Williams went for a career-high 29 points, including a string of eight straight Northeastern points to turn an 11-point deficit into a five-point game with 1:33 left, but William & Mary (17-11, 8-8) held on late to stave off the Huskies (6-21, 2-14) on Thursday night at Kaplan Arena, 84-77.
Â
Williams finished the night 11-of-16 from the field and 7-of-10 from long range, tied for sixth on Northeastern's single-game records list for made threes in a game and the second time this season a Husky has hit seven in a game.
Â
He was joined in double figures by
Youri Fritz, who recorded his third double-double of the season with 13 points and 12 rebounds,
Mike Loughnane (14 points, career-high eight rebounds, career-high nine assists) and
JB Frankel (10 points).
Â
As a team, Northeastern shot 50% (30-of-60), 11-of-29 from distance and held a 38-28 edge on the glass. In addition to its season-ending injuries, the Huskies were also without
Xavier Abreu (personal reasons) and
William Kermoury (illness) on Thursday.
Â
William & Mary had four players reach double figures led by 21 points from Kilian Brockhoff as the Tribe shot 45% overall, had 20 assists on 25 made baskets, went 32-of-39 at the line and turned 22 Northeastern turnovers into 22 points.
Â
The Huskies battled in the first half, shooting 43% as a team, controlling the glass and receiving 13 points from Williams. Northeastern led for more than 12 minutes in the half, thanks in part to five made triples including three from Williams.Â
Â
The Tribe, meanwhile, hung in there by forcing 13 Huskies turnovers and using a 12-5 run over minutes to seize the lead and take a 35-32 advantage into the break.Â
Â
Northeastern continued to fight throughout the second half, leveling the game at 41 early in the second half on a bucket from
Haris Elezovic. A 12-4 run over the next 3:11, though, put William & Mary back in control with 13:12 left, 53-45.
Â
An 11-1 William & Mary run, with seven of those points coming at the line, over three minutes midway through the half gave the hosts a double-digit lead with 7:44 left.
Â
But Northeastern wouldn't go away, as Williams buried eight straight Huskies points to bring NU within five with 1:33 to go, but the Tribe would put the game away at the line to ice it.
Â
The Huskies will be back in action on Saturday when Northeastern travels to Hampton for a 4 p.m. tip on FloCollege.
