THREE THINGS TO KNOW:
- KNOW YOUR HISTORY: Fifth-seeded Northeastern is making its eighth NCAA Tournament appearance and just second-ever as an at-large bid. This marks the Huskies first NCAA Tournament since 2023. The Huskies are 4-6-0 all-time in the NCAA Tournament and have made the Frozen Four three times. Against WCHA teams, NU is 2-3-0 all-time in the NCAA Tournament. Northeastern owns the No. 5 seed in the tournament. The last time the Huskies held the No. 5 seed, they went to Yale and defeated the No. 4 seed Bulldogs, 4-1 in 2023 to advance to a third-straight Frozen Four.
- A SWEDE SENSATION: Sophomore netminder Lisa Jönsson was one of 12 goalies named as a semifinalist for the National Goalie of the Year. The reigning National Goalie of the Month for February and Hockey East Second Team All-Star, this season Jönsson owns a 1.60 GAA and .941 save percentage. Her GAA ranks seventh in the country, and her save percentage is tied for sixth. Her record sits at 20-6-1, with her 20 wins ranking as tied for sixth-most in the NCAA. In the playoffs this year, Jönsson owns a .966 save percentage and 1.01 goals against average. She has played 237 minutes in three games, with two games going to OT. She set a new career-high with 54 saves in the Hockey East Championship game.
- CAN YOU DIG IT?: The Huskies and fourth-seeded Gophers are set to meet for the ninth time in program history and first time in the NCAA Tournament on Saturday. This marks the second postseason meeting between the two teams after the Huskies defeated Minnesota, 4-0, in the AWCHA consolation game in 1998. This is the first meeting since 2007 between the two sides. Minnesota won the 2007 meeting, 5-3. In that game, current assistant coach Lindsay Berman scored against the Gophers. Berman is not the only Husky to have faced the Gophers as graduate student Jaden Bogden helped Clarkson defeat Minnesota, 3-2, in 4OT in the NCAA Tournament in 2023. Minnesota sits at 26-11-1 on the season and most recently dropped 4-0 to then-No. 2 Ohio State in the WCHA playoffs. The Gophers are 12-6-1 at home this season. Abbey Murphy, a Patty Kazmaier Top-Three Finalist, leads the Gophers with 64 points, the second-best mark in the nation. In goal, Hannah Clark, a National Goalie of the Year Semifinalist, has played the bulk of the minutes for Minnesota. She owns a 1.99 GAA and .923 save percentage.
The winner will advance to the Frozen Four, hosted by Penn State at Pegula Ice Arena in State College, Pa. from March 20-22.
