Ed Matz resigns as head coach

Ed Matz, Northeastern's head women's soccer coach, has resigned his position to become the head women's soccer coach at Massachusetts. A national search for his replacement will begin immediately.

“Ed has built our program from its creation to become one of the best programs in New England and the CAA over the 13 years of his tenure,” Northeastern Athletics Director Peter Roby said. “I am grateful to Ed for his service to the university and our student athletes and wish him well.”

Matz started coaching at Northeastern in 1994, when he was named assistant coach of the men's soccer team. He rose to be head men's soccer coach in 1996 and had a 83-74-16 (.526) record in nine seasons, winning the America East championship in 2002. Matz added women's soccer head coaching duties in 1999, and in 2000, he was named Northeastern's director of soccer. In 11 seasons with the women's team, Matz compiled a 99-91-25 (.519) record. He led the Huskies to the CAA Tournament championship and the second round of the NCAA Tournament in 2008 and then led Northeastern to the CAA regular season title in 2009, earning CAA Coach of the Year honors. Matz's overall record as a head coach at Northeastern is 182-165-41 (.522).
