Northeastern was outshot 18-3 and lost 3-0 at Hartford on Sunday afternoon at Al-Marzook Field in West Hartford.
The Hawks, in winning their third straight game, improved to 6-4-0 overall and 1-0-0 in the America East. The Huskies dropped to 4-4-3 overall and 0-1-1 in the conference.
"We played very, very well," said NU head coach Ed Matz. "That's as well as we've played against Hartford since I've been coaching here. I know the score was 3-0, but the action was back and forth and we created a lot of chances. It was a great game."
Hartford put its first four shots of the match on goal but came away with nothing, as Northeastern goalkeeper Cynthia Slowik single-handedly kept the Huskies in the game with great saves. Her only mishap of the first half came on a shot from senior defender Annika Michaels, who lofted a ball into the box from more than 30 yards out. Slowik slipped on an attempt to retreat backwards, and the shot bounced into the goal for Michaels' first goal of the season and a 1-0 Hartford lead.
"I thought Cindy played great," Matz said. "The first goal was a tough one since she slipped on the wet field and the ball bounced in the goal."
The score remained the same until the 54th minute, when junior Jeanette Akerlund heel-kicked a ball to classmate Cindy Walsh inside the box on the left side. Walsh crossed the ball to senior Katharina Lindner on the right side, and the latter angled her shot past Slowik and into the left-side netting for her fourth goal of the season. Walsh tacked on the Hawks' final goal at 81:49, her fourth of the season. Akerlund and junior Katie Gardiner were credited with assists.
Junior goalkeeper Heather Hinton faced only three shots on the afternoon and made one save for her fourth shutout of the season. Slowik finished with eight saves and faced 18 shots.
