Beanpot Championship: Northeastern 7, Boston College 3

Senior Matt Cavallaro pitched a complete game to lead Northeastern to a 7-3 win over Boston College for the 13th annual Beanpot championship at Fenway Park. It was NU's first Beanpot title since 1995 and the team's third overall. Cavallaro, who earned his first win of the season to improve to 1-2, was named the tournament MVP. BC, the number one ranked team in New England, was the defending champion.

"This is a very big win for us," said 17th-year NU head coach Neil McPhee, whose team has now won three straight games after dropping eight of nine. "[BC] is a very strong team. This win was big not just in terms of the Beanpot, but for our season. Hopefully this will get us going and we can get on a roll."

Miguel Paquette doubled in Brad Czarnowski to break a 2-2 tie, starting a three-run Husky rally in the fourth that put NU ahead to stay. Czarnowski led off with a single and moved up when Luke Carlin walked. Paquette followed with his double and then Ben Beck got Czarnowski home with a sacrifice fly. Erik Hagstrom made it 5-2 when he knocked in Paquette with a single to left. NU added to the advantage with two more runs in the fifth on three straight doubles by Jeff Heriot, Czarnowski and Omar Pena.

The Huskies got on the board right away, scoring a pair of runs in the top of first without a hit, thanks to some sloppy BC play. Czarnowski led off with a routine grounder to BC shortstop Ryan Morgan, who booted it. After Pena flied out to center, Carlin bounced a ball to third baseman Jason Delaney whose throw to second sailed into right field, allowing Czarnowski to take third and Carlin to take two bases. Following a strikeout by Paquette, Beck was walked intentionally to load the bases and then BC starter Paul Knapic threw three straight balls to Hagstrom.

Former NU baseball and football assistant Pete Hughes, now in his fourth season as BC head coach, went to the bullpen to replace Knapic, who appeared not to be loose. Knapic, who has missed nearly all of the past two seasons with an arm injury, made his first appearance of this year just last week in a three-inning stint against Harvard. With the bases loaded, reliever James Dawson entered with a 3-0 count to Hagstrom and threw the fourth ball on the first pitch to give NU a 1-0 lead. Dawson then plunked Colin Gaynor to make it 2-0 before striking out Nick Graves to end the inning.

BC cut the deficit in half with a run of NU starter Matt Cavallaro in the second. Jeff Mackor led off with a double and moved to third on a fly out by Vinny Scavone. Mackor came home on Brian Durkin's groundout to short. BC tied it in the third when Josh DiScipio doubled, went to third on a Cavallaro wild pitch and scored on a single by Morgan.

Cavallaro, working on four days rest for the first time in his career, threw his second straight complete game against a Big East team. He gave up just two earned runs and struck out a career-high nine in NU's 6-3 loss to UConn last Thursday. Cavallaro gave up seven hits with three strikeouts against BC en route to his first win since May 5, 2001 against Hofstra.
