Northeastern jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and cruised to a 6-3 win over Albany in the first America East action of the season for both teams. Sophomore Jordan Thomson went the distance for the Huskies, scattering five hits and allowing just two earned runs to improve to 3-1 on the season. It was the first game of a doubleheader and the first-ever America East game for new league member Albany.
Newcomer Mike Steinberg, who played at Albany before transferring to NU, led off the game with a bunt single and Omar Pena followed with an infield hit. After a double steal, Luke Carlin walked to load the bases and Ben Beck delivered the first run of the game with a sacrifice fly. Freshman Colin Gaynor then doubled to left to drive in Pena and Carlin.
Albany got the leadoff man on in three of the first five innings, but Thomson escaped unscathed each time. The Huskies increased the edge to 6-0 with three runs in the fourth, all coming with two outs. Brad Czarnowksi's single knocked in Erik Hagstrom who had walked, stole second and advanced to third on a fly out by Nick Graves. Czarnowksi came around to score after some poor Albany defense. He went to second on a wild pitch and scored when third baseman Pat Delaney threw wildly to first after fielding a Steinberg grounder. Steinberg then scored on an RBI single by Carlin.
The Great Danes touched Thomson for three runs in the fifth, but the sophomore righty allowed just one more baserunner the rest of the way. That one runner, Delany in the sixth, was picked off by Carlin. NU's catcher also picked off another runner to end the fourth inning and caught Eddie Scott stealing after he walked to lead off the game.
