Northeastern 2, Binghamton 1 (game 1)

Justin Hedrick struck out 11 without a walk and threw a complete-game seven innings to lead Northeastern to a 2-1 win over Binghamton in the first game of an America East doubleheader at Friedman Diamond on Friday.

Hedrick (6-1) was dominant on the mound for the Huskies from the outset, striking out five batters through the first two innings and eight through four. With the 11 strike outs, he now has 73 on the year and moves into sixth place on the all-time single season list at NU. Hedrick allowed just four hits.

Binghamton starter JD Brink worked out of a first-inning jam and held off NU until the bottom of the fourth. Jeff Heriot led off the inning with a single for NU's first hit of the game and then scored when Omar Pena followed with double to the gap in left-center. After a perfectly executed sacrifice bunt by Arman Sidhu, Miguel Paquette delivered Pena from third with a ringing single to right.

Binghamton broke up Hedrick's shutout bid in the seventh. Jay Balback led off with a double and moved to third on a wild pitch. Hedrick fanned Joe Costello on a called third strike and then got T.J. Kowalchuk to line out to second base. Kyle Loucks knocked in Balback for the Bearcats' only run after bouncing a single just out of the reach of Pena at second. Hedrick left the tying run at first as he struck out Jacob Thiel for the second time to end the game.

The Huskies, who evened their overall record at 21-21, threatened in their first at-bat after Brink loaded the bases on a pair of walks and a hit batter. But Brink struck out Heriot and Pena to end the threat.

NU improved to 9-10 in America East play, while Binghamton fell to 2-17 and 10-37-1 overall.
