The Huskies shut out Valparaiso 9-0 behind seven strong innings by Justin Hedrick on Monday night at Manatee Community College in Bradenton, Fla. Hedrick struck out 10 and allowed only three hits in the victory.
NU scored its nine runs on only four hits as Valpo fielders made five errors and its pitchers walked nine batters. The win gives the Huskies a 2-1 record after dropping a 1-0 game to St. Anselm Monday morning.
NU got out to the lead in the bottom of the first. Leadoff hitter Mike Steinberg walked, then stole second to get into scoring position. Chris Emanuele hit a bomb to the warning track in right center but Valpo right fielder Michael Arensdorff hauled it in. First baseman Paul Koslowski singled Steinberg in to give NU a 1-0 lead. The run was all the Huskies would need in the victory.
The Huskies then scored eight runs over the next five innings to take a 9-0 lead. Jeff Heriot, Brad Czarnowski and Eric Murray each scored two runs for the winners.
Hedrick struck out the side in the fourth inning and collected two punchouts in the second inning. He exited after the seventh and Jim Madison stepped in.
Madison's first batter, second baseman Jon Rupno hit a hard liner to left field but Czarnowski made a great diving catch to rob him of the hit. Madison then struck out the next two batters. Matt Piryk came in and pitched a scoreless ninth.
