The Huskies rallied for two runs in the top of the ninth but it wasn't enough as NC State held on for a 5-4 win over Northeastern at Doak Field on Saturday. Justin Hedrick pitched seven strong innings for NU and Miguel Paquette hit his second homer of the season.
Hedrick (1-1) pitched well enough to win most games but took the loss. He allowed five runs (three earned) on 10 hits. He walked two and struck out four. NC State All-America selection Vern Sterry pitched 7 2/3 innings for the win. He allowed two runs on six hits and 11 strikeouts.
With the score 5-2 entering the ninth inning,NC State closer Joey Devine had his work cut out for him. Tim Bush struck out to lead off the inning. Paquette then hit a solo home run. Matt Morizio went down looking, but Brian Nutting doubled with two outs, and Brad Czarnowski singled to right to drive in Nutting, cutting the Pack's lead to 5-4. But Devine struck out Arman Sidhu to end the game.
Northeastern got on the board in the top of the seventh. Paquette hit a two-out double, and was driven in on a double by Morizino. The Huskies added another run in the eighth inning. Sidhu doubled and went to third on an errant pickoff throw by Sterry. Paul Koslowski knocked in Sidhu with a single to left.
NC State started the scoring early. Matt Camp led off the bottom of the first, singled to left and advanced to second when Hedrick walked Bryan Kinneberg. Camp scored on a single by David Hicks to put the first run on the board. Kinneberg and Hicks advanced a base on a wild pitch, and Kinneberg scored on a sacrifice fly by Dustin Knight.
Kinneberg led off the bottom of the third with a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Knight reached first on an error by Sidhu, and Maynor cleared the bases with a two-run double that split the gap and went off the wall in left center. Hicks hit his sixth home run of the season in the bottom of the fifth. to make the score 5-0.
Northeastern and NC State meet up for the final of their three game series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
