The Huskies lost to South Florida 4-1 on Tuesday night in Tampa, Florida. Starter Devin Monds took the complete-game loss, with USF's four runs coming in the bottom of the sixth. Monds walked three and struck out none in the game.
The Huskies got on the board in the fifth inning to break the scoreless deadlock. Brad Czarnowski started things off by bunting toward third base to reach first. He stole second to get into scoring position, then second baseman Eric Murray advanced him with a ground out. With Czarnowski on third, leadoff hitter Mike Steinberg singled to right, batting in the first run of the game.
South Florida took a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth. After a ground out, USF's Ty Taborelli hit a line drive at Monds, who knocked it down with his foot, but Taborelli made it to first. USF's Mike Macaluso walked to put men on first and second for Myron Leslie, who singled to load the bases for Jeff Baisley. Baisley hit the ball into right field, which scored Taborelli, and Macaluso came home when Jeff Heriot's throw sailed high. USF's Matt McHargue later hit a two-run single.
Monds faced the minimum number of batters through the first three innings. Taborelli reached base on an error to lead off the game. On a pickoff attempt, Monds threw the ball over first baseman Paul Koslowski's head but Heriot was backing up and threw Taborelli out as he tried to get to third base. Monds then set down the next two batters to end the inning.
Leading off the second inning, Monds walked Baisley, USF's cleanup hitter. After a fly-out, Husky infielders Arman Sidhu, Eric Murray and Koslowski combined for an inning-ending 6-4-3 double-play. Monds set down the Bulls in order in the third inning.
The Huskies threatened to score in the seventh inning. Chris Emanuele ripped a double down the left field line to lead off the inning and Koslowski followed with a walk. Heriot ripped a double off the right field wall, but Emanuele got a late jump on it and was thrown out at home.
The Huskies continue their spring action tomorrow against Valparaiso at IMG Academies at 3 p.m.
