Senior Justin Hedrick struck out a season-high 14 batters and senior Paul Koslowski drove in two runs to lead Northeastern (7-6) to a 3-1 win in the first game of its doubleheader with Harvard on Saturday, March 27 at Friedman Diamond. The Crimson (5-5) rallied for a 2-1 win in the nightcap.
Hedrick struck out seven of the first nine batters he faced, including the side in the third. The teams combined for just three hits in the first six innings.
Harvard's Zak Farkes broke a scoreless tie in the top of the seventh when he cranked a solo home run to left, his team-leading fourth long ball of the year.
Koslowski answered in the bottom of the inning with a solo shot to right. It was his first home run of the season and just the second of his career.
Sophomore Matt Morizio followed with a single and sophomore Brian Nutting got hit by a pitch. Senior Brad Czarnowski then came through with a base hit to right, bringing in Morizio and giving the Huskies a 2-1 lead.
Northeastern loaded the bases with one out in the eighth, and Koslowski lofted a sacrifice fly to center, plating the Huskies' third run.
Hedrick's 14 strikeouts are one short of his career high, which he set last year against Vermont. He gave up one run on three hits in 7.2 innings in earning his second win of the year.
Freshman Adam Ottavino pitched 1.1 scoreless innings and was credited with his first career save.
In game two, junior Jeff Heriot got NU on the board in the second, crushing a Trey Hendricks offering over the center-field wall to put his team up 1-0.
Husky starter Jordan Thomson cruised through the first six innings, allowing just two hits, but he got in trouble in the seventh.
Farkes and Hendricks led off with singles, and moved over to second and third on a sac bunt by Schuyler Mann. Thomson got Josh Klimkiewicz on strikes, but the third strike was wild, and Farkes scored to knot the game at 1-1.
The next batter, Rob Wheeler, struck out swinging, but the third strike again was wild, allowing Hendricks to score the go-ahead run.
Hendricks allowed one run on four hits while striking out six and walking none. Thomson was equally impressive, giving up just four hits and striking out eight.
Northeastern and Harvard do battle tomorrow at noon at the Crimson's O'Donnell Field.
