Tim Bush hit a seventh-inning homer and pitched the ninth inning for the save as Northeastern beat Rhode Island 3-1 on Saturday morning in Bradenton, Fla. Justin Hedrick started and went 4 2/3 innings and Jim Madison pitched 3 1/3 innings to earn the win. Bush pitched the ninth.
With a 2-1 Husky-lead, Bush led off the seventh inning with a bomb over the left field wall to put NU up 3-1. Jeff Heriot followed with an infield single, beating out the throw from the second baseman. Heriot got to second on a wild pitch but was stranded after the next two batters struck out.
URI cut the lead to one run in the eighth inning. Dan Batz doubled in Joe Viscuso for the score. Madison only let up the one run, though, getting Matt Sullivan to line out to NU second baseman Brian Nutting, who doubled off Batz at second.
The Huskies got their first run in the second inning. First baseman Paul Koslowski walked to lead off the inning and Jeff Heriot tripled him home. NU made the score 2-0 in the fourth inning when Chris Emanuele hit a triple and Koslowski got him to the plate with a sacrafice fly.
Hedrick was lights-out through the fourth inning. He set down the Rams in order through three innings on six strikeouts. In the fifth inning, Hedrick ran into some trouble, letting up an RBI single. Showing signs of tire from pitching against the Red Sox last night, Hedrick was relieved by Madison, who came on with runners on first and third and two outs. Madison got Viscuso to ground out to end the inning.
Northeastern plays its second game of the day at 3 p.m., taking on Indiana-Purdue.
