Freshman Dave Pellegrine threw three and a third scoreless innings to earn his first career victory, as the Huskies downed Massachusetts, 4-3, in the first round of the 2004 Baseball Beanpot at Campanelli Stadium in Brockton, Mass.
Northeastern will play the winner of Boston College/Harvard Wednesday night in the championship game at Campanelli Stadium (8 p.m.). Admission is free. NU improved to 15-10 on the season, while the Minutemen fall to 13-11.
Arman Sidhu went 2-for-4 with a double and scored twice for the Huskies, including the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Jeff Heriot went 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.
NU freshman Adam Ottavino went four innings in his fifth start of the year. He allowed two runs, striking out four and issuing three walks. Matt Piryk tossed an inning and two thirds, allowing one run off two hits.
The Huskies jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Leadoff hitter Brad Czarnowski was hit by a pitch. Sidhu singled. Chris Emanuele fouled out. Heriot singled to right for score Czarnowski and advance Sidhu to third. Paul Koslowski hit a sac fly to right field to score Sidhu. Heriot stole second then scored on a throwing error by UMass' second baseman.
UMass answered with two runs in the third and tied the game with a run in the sixth, but Pellegrine entered the game in the sixth inning and shut down the Minutemen's offense, not allowing a single hit.
In the bottom of the eighth, Sidhu led off with a stand-up double to left center. UM's Scott Ratliff relieved Devin Barnett, who went seven innings, giving up three earned runs off six hits. Chris Emmanuele struck out swinging. Heriot walked. Sidhu advanced to third on a wild pitch, then scored on a balk for the game winner.
