Junior Miguelle Paquette's two-run blast into the right field seats in the fourth inning gave the Northeastern baseball team the edge on Saturday, as the Huskies held off Maine in a non-conference matchup, 3-2, at Friedman Diamond.
With one down in the fourth, junior Tim Bush set the inning up with a basehit to centerfield. Paquette followed with his third homerun of the season, putting Northeastern ahead of the Black Bears, 3-0, early on.
Maine was down but not out, as it pieced together a two-run seventh inning to cut NU's lead to one. Junior Aaron Izaryk got things going for the Black Bears with a leadoff walk. With senior Mark Reichley at the plate, NU catcher Matt Morizio was called for interference on a ball that was drove into center field, giving Maine runners at first and second with nobody out.
Sophomore Jason Harey grounded out to NU starting pitcher Devin Monds, advancing Izaryk and Reichley into scoring position with one down. Senior Simon Williams followed with a clutch single to center, driving in two runs and cutting Maine's deficit to one.
Senior Jordan Thomson came on to relieve Monds, getting two key outs to preserve Northeastern's lead heading into the home-half of the seventh. Jordan would hold Maine scoreless over the next to innings to earn his first save of the season for the Huskies.
Northeastern now improves to 9-6 overall, while the Black Bears drop to 12-11 overall. Monds, now 1-2 on the season, scattered five hits and gave up one earned run in 6 1/3 innings en route to the win. Maine starter Greg Norton allowed six hits and two earned runs in five innings to pick up the loss, and now falls to 2-4 this year. Sophomore Troy Martin added three innings of scoreless relief, stiking out three and allowing two hits.
The Huskies return to the field on Sunday when they host Hartford in a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
