The Huskies upended Maine 7-1 to split a Friday doubleheader at Friedman Diamond. Starter Jordan Thomson went the distance and shut down the Black Bear offense while NU scored multiple runs in the first, third and fifth innings to put Maine away. Maine won the first game 3-2, so both teams hold a 1-1 conference record.
Thomson pitched seven innings, striking out seven while holding Maine to six hits. Maine starter Mike MacDonald took the loss after allowing five runs in four and one-third innings. MacDonald was America East's Pitcher of the Year in 2002. Northeastern improves to 11-9 overall while Maine is 14-13 after the doubleheader.
Northeastern took the lead in the bottom of the first after Maine plated a run in the top of the inning. Second-hitter Brad Czarnowski walked. Then Chris Emanuele hit a grounder to Maine shortstop Jason Harvey. Harvey couldn't get the throw to the second baseman, putting men on first and second. Jeff Heriot followed with a walk and Miguel Paquette hit a two-run single to left-center.
Czarnowski led off the third inning with a homer to right field, giving NU a 3-1 advantage. The Huskies then loaded the bases on singles by Emanuele and Heriot and a walk by Arman Sidhu. Tim Bush then hit a grounder to Maine third baseman Matt McGraw, who threw Sidhu out at second while Emanuele scored. Maine second baseman Mike Ferriggi tried to turn the double-play but his throw went off first baseman Greg Creek's glove, allowing Emanuele to score his second run. Matt Morizio hit a fly-out to center to end the inning with a 5-1 lead for Northeastern.
Northeastern put two more on the board in the fifth when Emanuele and Heriot led off the inning with a pair of singles and Sidhu hit a double down the left field line to plate them both.
Maine's Simon Williams led off the game with a single, then stole second and advanced to third when Morizio's throw went into center field. Creek singled him home before Joel Barrett hit into an inning-ending 5-4-3 double-play.
Maine led off the fifth inning with a pair of singles, but Thomson ended the threat, getting Williams to foul out and then inducing McGraw to ground into an inning-ending double-play.
MacDonald was relieved by freshman Justin Bishop with one out in the fifth inning, and Bishop held the Huskies scoreless to finish the game.
Northeastern concludes its series with Maine with a single game on Saturday at Friedman Diamond beginning at noon.
