Brad Czarnowski hit a bases-loaded single in the bottom of the ninth to score Matt Morizio and Eric Murray and give the Huskies a 3-2 win over Maine on Saturday at Friedman Diamond. The win gives NU a 2-1 series victory over the Black Bears after splitting a doubleheader on Friday.
With Morizio on first and Murray on second in the bottom of the ninth, Maine pitcher Jamie Grattelo walked Mike Steinberg to load them for Czarnowski. Czarnowski ripped a Grattelo offering to right for the game winner.
Devin Monds pitched the complete game for the Huskies, allowing just two runs in the fourth inning. He held Maine to six hits and one walk in the game. He settled down after having trouble in the fourth, holding Maine scoreless over the last five innings. Maine starter Troy Martin lasted just 2-1/3 innings before being relieved by Steve Richard. Grattelo relieved Richard with two outs in the eighth and took the loss.
Mike Steinberg led off the game with a homer to put NU up 1-0. He went 2-3 on the afternoon. Tim Bush and Morizio also collected hits for NU.
Maine scored twice in the fourth inning to take a 2-1 lead. Greg Creek and Joel Barrett led off the inning with singles, putting men on first and third for Matt McGraw. McGraw hit a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Creek. Monds then walked Aaron Izaryk and then balked, moving Barrett and Izaryk to second and third. Monds then threw a wild pitch, allowing Barrett to score.
Northeastern threatened to score in the fifth inning. With the bases loaded and one out, Chris Emanuele hit a fly ball to center, but no runners advanced. Jeff Heriot then came to the plate and blasted a 1-0 pitch, just foul off the right field wall. He then struck out to end the inning.
The Huskies travel to Vermont next weekend for their second conference series of the season. NU plays the Catamounts in a doubleheader Saturday and a single game Sunday.
