Jordan Thomson pitched a one-hit shutout with 13 strikeouts to lead Northeastern to a 2-0 victory over Hartford in the first game of a doubleheader on Friday at Muzzy Field in Bristol, Conn. Only three Hartford batters reached base, but the Huskies cut it close, waiting until the top of the ninth to score their pair of runs.
In the top of the ninth, Matt Morizio singled in Garret Chin for the winning run and Arman Sidhu scored on a wild pitch for an insurance run.
Thomson dominated the game right from the start, getting the first seven batters in a row, before allowing a bunt-single to Kyle O'Neill with two outs in the third inning. O'Neill was stranded, however, as Thomson went on to get the next 10 batters in a row. He walked Hawk right fielder Steve Moyer to lead off Hartford's end of the seventh, then retired seven more batters in a row until Josh Topp reached base on an error with one out in the bottom of the ninth. But Thomson got the final two outs for the shutout.
Thomson improves to 8-2 this season with the win, tying Greg Montalbano for second-most wins in a season by an NU pitcher. The win brings Thomson's all-time leading total to 24 and his 13 strikeouts bring the Northeastern record to 232. He struck out at least one batter in every inning and sruck out the side in order in the eighth inning.
Hartford's Scott Roy allowed two runs over 8-1/3 innings and took the loss. Jeff Swedburg finished the game. The Huskies won the second game, 16-1 to complete the sweep of the Hawks and improve to 26-15 overall and 12-4 in America East games. The Hawks fell to 10-30 and 4-13. The teams play the finale of the three-game series on Saturday at noon.
