The Northeastern baseball team finished the first weekend of May on a strong note, completing the series sweep of UMBC with a 6-1 win on Sunday afternoon at Friedman Diamond.
Junior Devin Monds had another solid outing for the Huskies (19-15, 8-4 America East), as he allowed just one run on six hits in the complete game effort. Monds, who struck out six, improves to 4-3 on the season. Northeastern has now won three straight, while UMBC (10-29, 3-9 America East) drops its fifth in a row.
It didn't take the Huskies long to strike, as Northeastern put its first run on the board just two batters into the game. After a leadoff single from senior Mike Steinberg, senior Brad Czarnowski drove a shot down the right field line, scoring Steinberg from first and putting Czarnowski on third with his second triple of the season.
With Northeastern leading, 1-0, in the bottom of the third, the Husky bats would give Monds all the run support he needed. With one away, junior Tim Bush hit his first triple of the season into the right field gap. After a walk to junior Jeff Heriot put runners on the corners, UMBC brought Jon Pavlis in from the bullpen.
Pavlis would throw a passed ball against the first batter he would face, allowing Bush to score what would be the game-winning run and Heriot to advance to second. With two down, sophomore Jeff Maher singled to left field, scoring Heriot and putting the Huskies ahead, 3-0. The Huskies put the game away in the seventh, as junior Miguel Paquette sent a blast, his fourth of the season, into the right field seats to leadoff the inning, giving NU a 4-0 lead. A couple of Retriever errors and a balk from relief pitcher Kyle Wildasin led to two more Northeastern runs.
UMBC picked up its only run of the game in the last inning. After a two-out single from Zach Clark, Monds' wild pitch allowed Clark to move to second base. Wildasin followed with a basehit of his own, scoring Clark easily.
Northeastern returns to the field on Thursday for a non-conference game with UMass at 3 p.m. on Friedman Diamond before heading to America East foe Binghamton for a doubleheader beginning at noon on saturday and a single game on Sunday at noon.
