The Huskies led 2-1 entering the ninth inning but Albany scored five runs in the top of the ninth to win 6-2 in the first game of a doubleheader on Friday at Friedman Diamond. Albany stayed in contention for the America East regular season title after winning the second game 4-2. The winner of Saturday's series finale wins the America East regular season title.
The Huskies loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the ninth but Albany reliever Shawn Ryan struck out Jeff Heriot to end the game. Northeastern falls to 27-17 (13-5 America East) with the loss while Albany improves to 35-11 (13-6).
NU starter Jordan Thomson cruised through the first seven innings, allowing one unearned run while striking out seven. Albany loaded the bases with two outs in the eighth inning and appeared to score the winning run when Thomson hit Albany's Joe Lamb with a pitch, but the umpire ruled that Lamb didn't make an effort to get out of the way and ruled it a ball. Lamb then lined out to end the inning.
With NU clinging to a 2-1 lead in the top of the ninth, Albany struck for five runs. Thomson returned to start the inning and loaded the bases with no outs before Adam Ottavino entered the game in relief. Albany then scored five runs on a two-run double, a sac-fly and a two-run single to break the game open. Thomson took the loss and fell to 8-3 this season. Albany starter Steve Emmerthal went 8-2/3 innings and struck out five to earn the win. Closer Shawn Ryan got the final out to earn the save for the Great Danes.
Northeastern took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third when Tim Bush hit a sac-fly to the wall that scored Jeff Heriot from third.
Albany scored in the top of the first when Dan Schoonmaker hit a long fly to center that went off Heriot's glove. Schoonmaker went all the way around the bases to score. The Huskies evened the score in the bottom of the second when Arman Sidhu hit an RBI-single that scored Tim Bush.
