The Huskies dropped a 15-6 decision to Stony Brook in a game that had eight homers in the first round of the America East Tournament on Thursday at Mahaney Diamond in Orono, Maine. Jeff Heriot had two solo homers for the Huskies. They will face the loser of Thursday's Albany-Maine game at noon on Friday. NU will have to win that game to advance.
NU's pitching staff, which has been the best in the conference this season, let up 15 runs on 20 hits, which were both season-highs. Stony Brook hit five homers. America East Pitcher of the Year Jordan Thomson made the start for the Huskies and gave up eight runs over two innings to take the loss. He has been nearly untouchable all season, posting a 0.50 ERA in conference play this season, but Stony Brook had his number. The Seawolves' Kevin Fitzgerald got the win after pitching six innings and allowing four runs.
Stony Brook's Andrew Larsen led off the game with a homerun. Thomson gave up two more hits before Stony Brook leadoff hitter Nick Theoharis homered to give the Seawolves a 4-0 lead after one inning.
Down 4-0, Heriot hit a two-out homer in the bottom of the first inning to get the Huskies within three runs, but NU's pitching didn't hold up.
Thomson gave up three runs in the second and allowed a hit to lead off the third inning before he was pulled in favor of Jim Madison. Madison, Matt Piryk and Dave Pellegrine pitched in relief for NU, combining for six innings and allowing seven runs.
Heriot and Miguel Paquette hit back-to-back homers in the fifth inning. Heriot also scored in the third inning on a single by Tim Bush. Jeff Maher scored a run in the eighth inning on Brian Nutting's RBI-single. Maher and Nutting were both pinch hitters.
The Huskies scored another run in the bottom of the ninth when Bush batted in Brad Czarnowski.
The Huskies fall to 28-19 on the season while Stony Brook improves to 27-25. The Huskies will have to win the rest of their games in the conference tournament to win the title. Follow the rest of the tournament on America East's Championship LIVE!.
