Jeff Heriot hit his third homer in two games but that was all the offense the Huskies could muster as they lost 8-1 to Albany and were eliminated from the America East Tournament on Friday at Mahaney Diamond in Orono, Maine. The Huskies entered the tourney as the top seed but dropped their first game to Stony Brook 15-6 on Thursday and were knocked out by Albany with their second loss. NU finishes the season at 28-20 and won its first ever America East regular season title with a 14-6 conference record.
The Huskies were in a 4-0 hole after the first inning. NU starter Devin Monds gave up all four runs and was lifted after giving up a bases-loaded double to Albany's Jason Martin and later walking in Dan Schoonmaker. Monds took the loss, falling to 5-4 on the season. Adam Ottavino came in with the bases loaded and one out in the first and got the final two outs, although one of Monds' runners scored.
Ottavino held the Great Danes scoreless through the fifth inning, but let up four runs in the bottom of the sixth. Jim Madison came in with two outs and men on first and second in the sixth and got a ground out to end the inning. He held the 'Danes scoreless through the remainder of the game.
Albany starter Adam Kroft was on a tear through seven innings. Other than Heriot's homer, Kroft had nine strikeouts through seven innings and tossed 1-2-3 innings in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. He earned the win, improving to 6-2 this season.
Mike Steinberg led off the game with a single for the Huskies but Brad Czarnowski grounded into a doubleplay. The Huskies got two men aboard in the second inning but couldn't score.
