Matt Morizio two two-run doubles in the sixth and seventh innings to give NU a 7-5 lead and Jim Madison and Adam Ottavino combined to hold Binghamton to one run in the bottom of the seventh, as Northeastern beat Binghamton 7-6 to sweep a doubleheader on Saturday in Vestal, N.Y. Northeastern won the first game 19-6.
The Bearcats scored five runs off NU starter Justin Hedrick and held a 5-1 lead over NU after five innings. But Northeastern persisted, score three runs in both the sixth and seventh innings to win the America East contest. Madison earned his fifth relief victory of the season, improving to 5-2 on the year. Ottavino got the final two outs for his second save of the season.
Down 5-1, Jeff Heriot hit a homer to lead off the seventh innings for NU. Morizio hit a two-run double that scored Tim Bush and Miguel Paquette, making it 5-4 heading into the final inning.
In the top of the seventh, Heriot and Paquette hit back-to-back singles and Tim Bush walked to load the bases for Jeff Maher. Maher hit a sac-fly to right that scored Heriot. Morizio followed with his second two-run double to score Bush and pinch-runner Garret Chin, giving NU a 7-5 lead.
Binghamton didn't give up, though, scoring a run off Madison in the bottom of the seventh. Ottavino relieved Madison with one out and held Binghamton scoreless for the 7-6 victory.
Northeastern improves to 23-15 overall and 10-4 in America East after sweeping the doubleheader. Binghamton drops to 19-17 and 7-7. The Huskies and Bearcats square-off for the third and final game of the series on Sunday at noon.
