Beanpot Tournament Northeastern 7, Boston College 2

The Northeastern baseball team advanced to their eighth Beanpot championship game after defeating Boston College in the first round, 7-2, Wednesday evening at LeLacheur Park in Lowell, Mass.

The Huskies (13-15) got the win thanks in large part to strong pitching by freshman Kris Dabrowiecki (5-1) and senior Jim Madison, who did not allow a run in seven combined innings.

Dabrowiecki got his fifth win of the year, becoming the first freshman to win five games in a season since current seniors Devin Monds and Matt Piryk won five apiece in 2002. He allowed just five hits in five innings, walking one and striking out three.

NU got its first two runs in the fourth inning on three consecutive hits off of Eagles starter Terry Doyle (4-1). Junior Arman Sidhu hit a double to right center and scored on senior Jeff Heriot's RBI double down the right field line. Senior Miguel Paquette followed him with a single up the middle to give NU the 2-0 advantage.

The Huskies added insurance runs in the eighth inning when they exploded for five runs. Junior Chris Emanuele reached on an error by BC shortstop Marco Albano and later scored on a Heriot RBI single. Junior Matt Morizio followed up with a two-run single through the right side to plate Sidhu and Heriot. Junior Jeff Maher then hit a two-run single to right to give NU a commanding 7-0 lead.

The Huskies had a bit of a scare in the bottom of the eighth as the Eagles (23-12) loaded the bases with no outs and put two runs on the board. However, Piryk came on in relief of sophomore Tristan Besse and got three outs to end the Eagles' rally.

In addition to the strong pitching performances, NU's defense was solid all night. In the third inning, Sidhu dove far to his left to stop a Dave Preziosi ground ball and then made a strong throw to first to throw him out. In the fifth, with two men on, freshman Mike Lyon made a backhand stop on a Drew Locke line drive to stop the Eagles' rally. During the Eagles' two-run eighth, Sidhu stopped a line drive by Tom Mackor, diving to his right to save two runs.

The Huskies will play for their fourth Beanpot title tomorrow when they meet Harvard at 5 p.m. at Fenway Park.
