The Northeastern baseball team fell short of its fourth Beanpot title, losing to Harvard in the final, 7-3, at Fenway Park Thursday night.
The Crimson (19-10) jumped out to a 2-0 lead on NU starter Jim Madison (1-3) in the first inning. Leadoff batter Matt Vance doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly by first baseman Josh Klimkiewicz. Schuyler Mann then singled home Steffan Wilson, who was hit by a pitch.
Down 3-0, the Huskies (13-16) put two on the board when sophomore Dan Milano crushed a Jason Brown (1-0) pitch off the Vanilla Coke bottle on top of the Green Monster for a two-run homer, cutting Harvard's lead to 3-2.
Harvard added runs in the third, fifth, sixth and eighth innings and did not look back.
The Huskies pushed across a run in the seventh when junior Chris Emanuele hit a sacrifice fly to right, scoring junior Brian Nutting.
NU, however, was mostly shut down by Harvard's pitching. The Huskies mustered only five hits, and when they did reach base, they could not get the big hits to score runs. Overall, the team stranded six runners on base.
Harvard wins its second outright Beanpot title. The Crimson took home the 'Pot in 1991. They also shared the title with Massachusetts in 1998 when the championship game was rained out.
Northeastern meanwhile will wait another year before trying to notch its fourth Beanpot and first since 2002.
The Huskies will resume America East play in a battle for first place when they host Vermont in a doubleheader on Saturday, April 23, at 12 p.m.
