The Northeastern baseball team held a 9-5 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth, but Stony Brook rallied for five runs to beat the Huskies in the final regular season game of the season, 10-9, in the second game of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at University Field in Stony Brook, N.Y.
The Huskies (25-21, 14-6 America East) had defeated the Seawolves (23-28, 10-11 America East) in the first game, 4-2 in 10 innings to clinch the regular season conference title, their second consecutive first place finish.
NU had 17 hits and nine runs on the day, including a 4-5, five RBI game for junior Chris Emanuele, but allowed the Seawolves to come back and win in the last frame.
With senior Jim Madison on the mound, Stony Brook loaded the bases on two singles and a walk. After a sacrifice fly to cut NU's lead to 9-6, Madison hit a batter to end his day. Freshman Kris Dabrowiecki (6-2) came in, walked in a run, struck out the next batter, allowed a two-run single to tie the game at 9-9 and then gave up the game-winner, a single to center to bring home the 10th and final run.
Jeff Casagrande (1-0) pitched the final two innings for Stony Brook to earn the win.
Despite the loss, the Huskies will enter next week's America East Tournament, to be held in Burlington, Vt., as the top seed. NU will play Binghamton, whom the Huskies are 1-1 against this season, on Thursday, May 26 at 3:30 p.m. while Maine will play Vermont at 7 p.m. The tournament is double-elimination and the winner will earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
