Baseball

Binghamton 2, Northeastern 0 (Game Two)

Binghamton starting pitcher Scott Diamond threw a complete game shutout as the Bearcats defeated the Northeastern baseball team, 2-0, in the second game of a doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Friedman Diamond.

NU had beaten the Bearcats, 2-1, in the first game.

Diamond (3-4) struck out six batters in his outing. He scattered six hits and walked three.

The Huskies (19-19, 10-4 America East) had their opportunities to score, but left five men on base and had two more caught stealing. Senior Devin Monds (2-5) once again was a victim of a NU offensive shortage. He allowed just one earned run on five hits in seven innings. He struck out eight batters, but took his fifth loss of the season. NU has scored just four runs in those five losses.

Binghamton (20-20, 9-5 America East) got its runs in the fifth inning. Monds issued a leadoff walk to Jeff Monaco, who stole second and scored on Jamie Boyer's RBI single up the middle. Boyer then scored on junior shortstop Arman Sidhu's throwing error to make it 2-0 in favor of the Bearcats.

That was all that Diamond needed as he recorded his third complete game of the season and first shutout.

The Huskies, despite the split, remain in sole possession of first place in America East at 10-4. Maine and Vermont are half a game back at 10-5 while Binghamton is still a game back at 9-5. NU's magic number to clinch a berth in the America East tournament is three.

The final game of this series has been postponed and no makeup date has been announced.

Northeastern will look to add to the win column when they play at Central Connecticut on Tuesday, May 10, at 3 p.m.
