The Northeastern baseball team shut out the Boston College Eagles, 2-0, at Fenway Park on Wednesday to capture the Beanpot Tournament. It was the Huskies' first Beanpot win since 2002 and the team's fourth overall since the tournament's inception in 1990. The game was called after eight innings due to heavy rainfall.
Sheldon McDonald, Bobby Carrington, Dan Zehr and Ryan Quigley combined for the shut out, with Carrington picking up his first Husky win and Quigley notching his fifth save of the season.
All of the scoring in the game came in the sixth inning. Mike Lyon led off the inning with a booming double two-thirds of the way up the Green Monster. Captain Dan Milano then singled to center field, driving in Lyon and advancing to second base on the throw. The Huskies then manufactured the second run as Milano tagged and moved over to third on a Josh Porter fly out down the right field line and then scored on a sacrifice fly hit by James Donaldson.
The Husky outfield also made its presence known, as center fielder, David Gustafson, and right fielder, Tony DiCesare, each made tremendous diving catches in the game. Gustafson's came on the Eagles' first out of the game, robbing Ryan Hutchinson of extra bases. DiCesare's came with no outs in the eighth, over near the Pesky poll down the right field line, taking a hit away from Joseph Ayers.
The win improves the Huskies to 20-10 on the season and drops the Eagles to 16-22-1. The Huskies host a three-game set with conference foe Delaware beginning at Friedman Diamond on Friday at 2 p.m. Kris Dabrowiecki (6-1) will be on the mound for the Huskies.
