NU falls to 'Nova in Game Two

The Northeastern University baseball team dropped the second game of its season-opening doubleheader to the Villanova Wildcats 7-3 at Manatee Community College in Bradenton, Fla. on Saturday.

The game began as pitcher's duel between Husky freshman Les Williams, making his collegiate debut, and Villanova senior Jordan Ellis. The Huskies took a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the fifth, but Williams was eventually touched for seven runs in 5-1/3 innings of work and suffered the loss.

Offensively, Frank Compagnone hit his first home run of the season to break a 1-1 tie and temporarily gave the Huskies a 2-1 lead in the fifth, while Tony DiCesare and Mike Lyon each capped off strong offensive days with two hits apiece to lead the Husky offense.

In the bullpen, junior transfer Russ Lloyd and redshirt freshman JT Ross had excellent NU debuts as well, combining for 2-2/3 scoreless innings of one-hit, three-strikeout ball.

Northeastern slipped to 1-1 with the loss, while Villanova picked up its first win of the season to improve to 1-5. The Huskies will be at IMG Academies in Bradenton for two more games tomorrow, the first against Bowling Green at 10 a.m. and the second against Western Michigan at 2 p.m. Junior Jeff Thomson will start game one for the Huskies while sophomore Ryan Quigley takes the ball in game two against Western Michigan.
