The Northeastern University baseball team suffered a 7-4 setback in the opening game of a three-game series against Georgia State at The Field in Panthersville, Ga. on Friday night.
In what was an back-and-forth game through the first five innings, the Huskies got on the board first when sophomore David Gustafson belted his second home run on the season in the second inning, a solo shot to center field. The lead was short-lived, however, as the Panthers came back to score three runs in the bottom half of the inning.
The Huskies were able to tie the game at 3-3 in the third with back-to-back base knocks from junior Mike Tamsin and senior captain Mike Lyon, and then they went on to take a 4-3 lead in the fifth when junior James Donaldson scored from third on a fielder's choice hit by Frank Compagnone. The Panthers answered right back again, however, with three runs in the bottom half of the fifth, which was enough to hold off the Huskies. Donaldson was the lone Husky to finish with multiple hits in the game.
Senior captain Kris Dabrowiecki started the game for NU and dropped to 1-3 on the season after allowing nine hits and six runs in five innings of work, and adding four strikeouts in the effort. Sophomore Sheldon McDonald pitched the final three innings for the Huskies, allowing one hit and one run, while striking out three.
The Huskies fell to 9-9 overall and 2-5 in the CAA with the loss, while the Panthers improved to 16-8 on the season and 5-5 in the conference. The teams are back in action on Saturday at 1 p.m. Junior Jeff Thomson will takes the mound for the Huskies.
