NU walk off with 10-9 win over IPFW

While Frank Pesanello's grand slam in the seventh temporarily gave the Huskies an 8-6 lead, it was James Donaldson's fielder's choice to shortstop in the bottom of the ninth with runners on first and second with one out that broke a 9-9 tie and scored the winning run in game two of a doubleheader vs. Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne at Manatee Community College in Bradenton, FL on Saturday evening. The win gave the Huskies a split on the day with the Mastadons, as they lost game one, 5-1.
Pesanello, the Huskies' powerful junior catcher, led the offense all day. The grand slam was his fourth home run of the season and he finished the game 3-5 with three runs scored. On the day, Pesanello combined to go 5-7 with a double, homer, four RBI and four runs scored.
Sophomore David Gustafson and junior Mike Tamsin helped Pesanello pace the Husky offense in the game. Gustafson smacked a three-run shot over the right field scoreboard in the bottom of the third, his first long ball of the year, while Tamsin added three hits and an RBI. Sophomore Frank Compagnone, along with captains Mike Lyon and Josh Porter, also added clutch hits down the stretch for the Huskies.
Freshman Les Williams started the game on the mound for the Huskies, going six innings and picking up six strikeouts in the no-decision effort. Junior Dan Zehr and senior Bobby Carrington then combined to pitch the seventh and eighth before sophomore Sheldon McDonald tossed a perfect ninth to pick up the win and improve to 3-0 on the season.
Northeastern improves to 6-4 with the victory to complete its annual Florida trip, while IPFW drops to 2-5-1. NU is back in action on Friday when it begins a three-game series at Delaware to open its CAA schedule.
