The Northeastern University baseball team was edged by cross-city rival Boston College 8-7 on Tuesday afternoon in the Huskies home opener at Friedman Diamond in Brookline, Mass. The two teams combined for six home runs (three for each team) in what was back-and-forth game between the Boston squads.
Junior Frank Pesanello cranked a pair of two-run homers in the game to give him eight on the season and put him one behind captain Mike Lyon for the team lead. In his first career start at first base, sophomore Brendan Stokes had a big game at the plate, going 2-4 with a double, homer and two runs scored. Lyon and junior Mike Tamsin each added a pair of hits for the Huskies as well.
The Huskies got on the board first in the bottom of the second with Pesanello's first two-run shot and the solo homer by Stokes. The Eagles then came back to take the lead after scoring four times in the top of the fourth. Though the Huskies would come back to tie the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the inning, it was as close as the Huskies would get to regaining the lead for the remainder of the game.
Freshman Les Williams started the game for the Huskies and took the loss after allowing six earned runs over 5-2/3 innings pitched. He held the Eagles scoreless through the first three innings, but was unable to maintain a consistent rhythm the second time through the lineup. Sophomore Sheldon McDonald limited the Eagles to two hits and one run after coming in to toss the final 3-1/3 innings.
Northeastern drops to 10-11 on the season, while Boston College improves to 12-14 overall. Northeastern is back in action on Friday when it hosts red-hot CAA foe UNC Wilmington for a three-game series at Friedman Diamond. Friday's game begins at 2 p.m.
