Frank Pesanello hit a double and his team-leading 13th homer of the season as the Northeastern University baseball team defeated the University of Connecticut for the first time since 1996, winning 9-6 at J.O. Christian Field in Storrs, Conn. on Monday afternoon.
NU was able to jump out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first, and then added three more runs in the third, which was all it would need to defeat the Connecticut Huskies. In addition to belting the double and homer, Pesanello plated three runs on the afternoon. Frank Compagnone and Mike Tamsin each picked up two hits apiece from the top two spots in the lineup, and Jeff Dunlap went 2-4 with a run scored in his first career start to pace the Husky offense.
After a shaky weekend at Virginia Commonwealth, the Husky pitching staff was bounced back nicely against Connecticut. Starter Les Williams picked up his first collegiate win after lasting six innings and allowing seven hits, three earned runs and two walks, while fanning seven batters. Ryan Quigley tossed the final three innings, allowing two hits and two runs, while striking out five UConn batters.
Northeastern improves to 13-16-1 with the win, while Connecticut falls to 18-18 on the season. NU is back in action tomorrow when it takes on Harvard in the consolation game of the Beanpot at Fenway Park at 1 p.m.
