Mike Lyon hit a walk-off single scoring Tony DiCesare from second base with two outs in the bottom of the tenth inning, as the Northeastern University baseball team defeated Harvard in the consolation game of the Beanpot at Fenway Park on Tuesday afternoon. The Huskies are now 19-17 all time in Beanpot contests.
It was a back-and fourth game throughout, with several lead changes and ties occuring in the contest. Mike Tamsin and Lyon provided much of the offensive punch for the Huskies in the game, each recording three hits on the day. Tamsin slapped three singles, was intentially walked twice and scored a run, while Lyon finished 3-6 with an RBI-double and a run scored to go along with the game-winning single.
Tony DiCesare and Frank Compagnone each had RBI-doubles in the game as well, DiCesare's a two-run double off of the Green Monster in the fourth and Compagnone's a lined shot down the right field line in the fifth.
Kris Dabrowiecki started a little shaky for the Huskies, but turned in a strong performance, earning a no-decision after allowing seven hits and two earned runs in over six innings while walking two and striking out four.
Junior Trevor Smith relieved Dabrowiecki and made his first appearance of the season after returning from off-season surgery. He went 1-1/3 innings in his season-debut, alowing hit and one run. Sheldon McDonald got the win and improved to 6-1 on the season after tossing 2-2/3 perfect innings of relief to close out the game for NU, striking out four in the process.
Northeastern improved to 14-16-1 on the season with the win, while Harvard dropped to 4-26 overall. The Huskies are back in action on Saturday when they host Towson in a doubleheader at Friedman Diamond beginning at 11 a.m.
