The Northeastern University baseball team fell to Boston College 13-6 in the opening round of the 2008 Beanpot Tournament at Fraser Field in Lynn, Mass. on Wednesday afternoon. The Huskies entered the game as the defending Beanpot champions, but will face the loser of Wednesday night's Harvard/UMass contest in the consolation game at Fenway Park next Wednesday.
Husky starter Ryan Quigley was dominant for much of the game and struck out a career-best 11 batters in seven innings of work against the Eagles, but took the loss after allowing five earned runs on eight hits and four walks. After Quigley exited the game the Eagles blew the game open against a struggling Northeastern bullpen.
Tony DiCesare and David Gustafson led the Huskies with three hits apiece on the day. DiCesare finished 3-5 with an RBI-double and two runs scored, while Gustafson went 3-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Also having a big day on offense for the Huskies was freshman Chris Guillemette, who in his first career start, picked up his first two career hits, including an RBI-single in the ninth.
The Huskies dropped to 11-14-1 on the season with the loss, while the Eagles improved to 18-14. NU is back in action on Friday night when it begins a three-game series at VCU. First pitch is at 7 p.m.
