Huskies downed by JMU, 10-6

The Northeastern University baseball team dropped a 10-6 contest in the second game of a three-game series against James Madison at Friedman Diamond on Friday afternoon. The Huskies dropped to seventh place in the Colonial Athletic Association standings, but the team's post-season hopes are still very much alive. If the Huskies win tomorrow's series finale against the Dukes and Georgia State and Towson split the final two games of their series, the Huskies will move into sixth and qualify for the CAA Championship in Wilmington, NC next week.

Neither starting pitcher in the game lasted more than three innings. James Madison's Trevor Kaylid was chased from the game after allowing four runs on four hits in the first 2-2/3 innings, while Jeff Thomson was pulled from the game after allowing four runs on six hits in the opening three frames. Les Williams took the loss in relief for the Huskies. He started out strong but ended up allowing seven hits and five earned runs over a 5-1/3 inning relief stint. Bobby Carrington relieved Williams with one down in the top of the ninth and retired the only two batters he faced. The Dukes' Kurt Houch picked up the win in relief.

The bottom third of the Husky lineup provided much of the offense for the Huskies in the game. James Donaldson went 2-4 with a run scored from the seven-spot. Teddy Zentek finished 2-3 with a walk and two runs scored from the eight-spot. And Brendan Stokes went 1-1 with two sacrifice bunts and a walk out of the nine-hole in the lineup. Josh Porter also had two hits and two RBI for the Huskies in the game.

Frank Pesanello became the first Husky to hit 20 home runs in a season when he hit a laser to left field with one down in the ninth inning, but it only brought the Huskies within four runs as they could not complete the comeback.

The Huskies dropped to 25-25-1 overall and 12-16-1 in the CAA with the loss, while James Madison improved to 33-17 on the season and 19-9 in the conference. Ryan Quigley takes the mound tomorrow for the Huskies in a must-win situation. It will also be both Alumni Day and Senior Day at Friedman Diamond, with a cookout beginning at 11:30 a.m. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
