The Northeastern University baseball team outhit the Hofstra Pride 11-6, but stranded nine base runners and took a 5-2 loss in the opening game of a three-game series at Friedman Diamond on Friday afternoon.
Jeff Thomson, usually known for being impeccable with his accuracy, struggled with his control in his start on Friday, lasting just three innings and allowing four hits, four runs and three walks. Charly Bashara was outstanding in relief, keeping the Huskies in striking distance for the remainder of the game. In six innings of work, Bashara allowed just two hits, one unearned run and four walks to go along with nine strikeouts.
Mike Tamsin led the Huskies with three hits in the game, while Frank Compagnone and Josh Porter each went 2-4. Mike Lyon added his team-leading 16th double, while David Gustafson added his 12th two-bagger, good for second on the Huskies. Both Husky runs scored on an infield single hit by Ryan Maguire, with the second run crossing the plate on a throwing error by Hofstra shortstop Tom Legregni.
The Huskies drop to 17-22-1 overall and 7-14-1 in the CAA with the loss, while Hofstra improves to 18-31 on the season and 6-19 in the conference. The teams are back in action tomorrow at 12 p.m. Les Williams will take the mound for the Huskies.
